Some FAQ's

Here are some regularly asked questions about us and our services.

What is different about Tropical North Psychiatry?

One of the most common feedbacks that we receive is the comfortable setting in which we practice. Our sessions are conducted in the privacy of a home environment in a friendly atmosphere to help create a sense of ease right from the initial appointment. There are no problems finding a park or having to go into the heart of town for treatment.

What are your charges?

Dr Taylor charges about $350 (about $130 above the rebate) for the first consultation and $250 (about $95 above the rebate) for subsequent consultations. A discount of $50 is generally given to pensioners and health care card holders. Sometimes, further discounts are made at his discretion.

Eligible DVA card holders are bulk billed.

What type of patients do you treat?

We assist patients with a variety of different mental health problems, and specialise in treatment of mood disorders, anxiety states, and mental health issues involving military and ex-military personnel as well as from physical illness.

Are there areas that you do not treat or practice?

Although we are able to provide evaluation services in various scenarios, we do not offer medico-legal work or provide medico-legal reports.

Have you been practicing Psychiatry in Cairns for long?

This is Dr Taylor's second time in Cairns, practicing here first between 1995 - 2003 and returned to the north in 2013 after spending 10 years on the Fraser Coast. Cairns is now our permanent base and where we call home.

What's involved with the initial appointment and consultation?

Usually the first appointment will involve a consultation lasting for at least one hour. This is a chance to gather a detailed history of your life including aspects of your personal, family and employment history. He will explore current issues and stressors in your life, including how these impact on our day-to-day existence.

What areas of my my life can you help with?

Dr Taylor can help you in a number of ways to develop a plan that enables you to manage anxiety, depression, mood swings PTSD, stress, relationship problems, self esteem problems, work stress and medication queries.

How do you differ from a Psychologist?

Although there is some overlap between Psychologists and Psychiatrists in the treatment of mental health problems, the main difference is that Psychiatrists complete their medical degree prior to obtaining their postgraduate qualifications in the field of psychological medicine.

Psychiatrists therefore have a knowledge of general medicine; and can prescribe medication when that is needed.

Do I need a referral in order to make an appointment?

In order to receive Medicare or other relevant rebates you will require a referral from another medical practitioner (usually your family doctor)

Do you offer services for mental health in children?

Our experience and current work involves general adult Psychiatry, so in most scenarios we will refer child cases to an appropriately qualified colleague or professional.
